1. 19 April 1950. The gorilla was wheeled onto the pitch for the photograph and normally resided outside the cinema to promote the film Mighty Joe Young. Home v Batley lost 8-12. Mighty Joe Young was a feature film that was very similar to 'King Kong' (it was made by the same creative team). It was showing at the local cinema and the cinema manager (one Mr Arthur Atkinson at the time) arranged for 'Joe' to be present at the Castleford game. The film was remade in 1998 starring Charlize Theron.
