The season brought the experimental introduction of the handover after the sixth tackle and the introduction of the sin bin halfway through the season.

At Castleford, it was another steady season. The club again made a semi-final, again the Challenge Cup and again against Hull. Unfortunately it ended in defeat – again. All other trophies had 1st round defeats.

The most satisfying results would have been a 32–5 home victory over Leeds in November, followed a week later by a 24–23 win at St Helens courtesy of a Terry Richardson try two minutes from time. In fact Castleford did the double over Saints with a more emphatic 31–10 win in January and then in March did the double over Leeds, winning 18–5 at Headingley.

Castleford had the distinction of the biggest win of the season, when they beat Carlisle 66–8 in April in a game played at Wakefield, where Carlisle were forced to play after their ground was needed for football purposes. This match set a rugby league record for an away win since the format of 2 divisions was adopted in 1973, being the highest score and also the widest winning margin. Two weeks later Castleford went to Halifax and won 47–2 to create a Division I record score in an orthodox away game. The team won their last 5 games of the regular season but it was of no avail as the first Play-Off game brought a 14–35 loss at Hull KR.

The playing record was P30 W18 D1 L11 to finish 7th from 16. Overall 37 matches were played and 33 players used. Average attendance continued to slide, falling to 3548. Robert Beardmore kicked 117 goals, achieving the 100 goal feat for the first time in 5 years since Sammy Lloyd in 1977/78. His twin brother Kevin, meanwhile, was in prolific try scoring form, getting 4 in the 66-8 win over Carlisle and two other hat tricks in the season. He was joined in the 3 try table by Tony Marchant, Darren Coen and Gary Hyde. The Carlisle game was a notable Castleford club record as it was the first time ever that 3 players had scored a hat trick in the same game.

Geoff Wraith retired to take over as "A" team coach as John Sheridan had stood down to take up a position in Colts football. Paul Norton had to retire due to injuries, as did Jimmy Crampton with a neck injury. Crampton though rescinded his decision and played on the following season.

There had been transfer attempts, with a bid for Bradford's David Redfearn rejected. John Joyner remained on the list at £110,000, prompting the League Executive Committee to ask for the figure to be reduced, which it subsequently was to £95,000. In March 1983, he agreed to be taken off the list. Elsewhere, prop signing from Featherstone last season, Kevin Anderson was on the transfer list for £30,000 as early as November.

In Geoff Wraith's first year, the "A" team were again a shining example, topping the Yorkshire Senior Competition table, beating Hull KR in the Challenge Cup final 23–19 away, and beating Hull 22–2 in the Top Four Play-Off final. David Roockley was Player of the Year. Honourable mention must also go to Ian Birkby though who scored over 350 points, with more than 20 tries and 120 goals.

Malcolm Reilly enjoyed a benefit season for his services to the club. Although he had stated his playing days were over, he made his 300th appearance for the club in December in a 21–7 win at home to Leigh and did not in fact retire for another couple of years.

In recognition and awards, Castleford were Daily Mirror Team of the Month in November and February.
