Following last season's name change to the Tigers, the shirt now adopted the Tiger Head logo, formally registered against unauthorised use outside the club. In the club shop, replica shirts were £32.99 and match videos were £12.99.

These years of the club's history were the most fruitful in Yorkshire cup terms. Having tried for fifty years before winning it for the first time, Castleford now seemed to have a stranglehold. The holders went through for their 8th final in 11 years and met Bradford Northern in a rematch of the 1987 final. This time though Castleford eased to victory by 28– 6 at Elland Road in front of 8,916.

Next came the Regal Trophy and another semi-final appearance but Leeds were too strong, winning 24–4.

When the Challenge Cup came around Castleford were one of the top clubs with a valid chance of success. This was proved with a trip to the semi-final and a win over Hull 8–4 to gain more revenge for the 1980s cup defeats. Castleford had earned a visit to Wembley, although the victory was tarnished after crowd trouble between the two sets of fans. The all conquering Wigan team were opponents and were too strong, winning 28–12. However, this was a time when Wigan took everyone to the cleaners at Wembley so the result, although disappointing, could have been a lot worse. In context of other cup finals of the era Castleford's performance stood up to scrutiny.

Graham Steadman had been a big contributor to the cup run, scoring four tries in the 50–0 win over Trafford Borough, three tries in the next round 28–12 win over Hunslet and one try and a drop goal in the quarter-final 19–12 win over Featherstone Rovers. Unfortunately he could not add to the total after that. If Graham had duplicated his Yorkshire Cup Final Man of the Match performance of two tries and four goals for a record 16 point haul, Castleford could have maintained their proud unbeaten at Wembley claim. One man should not be expected to carry a team though.

The team again hit their best consistency in January, during a run of 10 wins and 2 draws through to March. There was no fall off this year, but still the club fell just short in the cup, and the premiership play-offs resulted in a semi-final defeat at St Helen's 30–14 in a final effort to win silverware for the season.

The league record was P26, W15, D2, L9 for a finish of 3rd from 14, the club's best finish in years. 40 games were played in total and 29 players used. For the third season running Graham Steadman scored 3 hat tricks, although one of them was better as he scored 4 in the 50-0 win over Trafford Borough mentioned above. The only other hat trick was recorded by Simon Middleton. With a successful season, the previous years average attendance fall was reversed and grew by 446 to 6465. Lee Crooks made the goal ton kicking 111. Coach Darryl Van de Velde, assessing the progress made, extended his stay for another year.

Players making their last appearance notably included Castleford legend John Joyner, who had enjoyed a three-month benefit at the start of the season prior to announcing his retirement.

In the Alliance, Castleford finished third in the league for the third season running but were unable to make any impression in the cup competitions. After the abandoning of the Colts teams three years previously, the rugby league now introduced Academy teams for under 18 players. Castleford were advertising for new recruits to train under coach Dennis Hartley.

In transfer speculation, Castleford had shown an interest in signing South Sydney scrum-half Craig Coleman but eventually went in for Mike Ford. Later on, the club tried unsuccessfully to swap Graeme Bradley and Martin Ketteridge for Oldham centre Charlie McAllister. He eventually went to Sheffield Eagles in a swap deal.

In recognition, ex-player and coach Malcolm Reilly was awarded an OBE. Graham Steadman was voted the First Division Player of the Year and Darryl Van de Velde was among the nominations for Coach of the Year. Graham Steadman was named Sunday Mirror Entertainer of the Month in February and John Joyner received the Rugby League Writers Association Merit Award for services to the game.
