Season Summary
1993/94

With a newly elected chairman in Eddie Ashton the new season also started with assistant coach John Joyner stepping up to head coach. Although he started on a defeat, Castleford won 9 and drew 1 of their next 11 games, including a 16–4 victory over the New Zealand tourists. Good runs were a feature of the season, as from early December to early March the club also won 14 of its 17 games.
The highlight of the season was the battle to the Regal Trophy final against Wigan after beating Hull KR 16–12, Leigh 54–14, Carlisle 44–4 and Bradford 23–10. The 33–2 humbling of a star-studded Wigan team was one of the biggest shocks of the time, being more a reflection of the invincibility of Wigan than any lack of class in Castleford.
The club also reached the Challenge Cup semi-final where Wigan were the opponents again. This time Wigan won 20–6 and later completed their seventh consecutive Wembley win.
The season finished with P30 W19 D1 L10 for a 4th place finish in an increased league of 16. Overall, 43 games were played and only 24 players used. Surprisingly, and worryingly perhaps, in a successful season the average attendance slipped by 103 to 5555.
The end of season Premiership play-offs were another fruitful competition, and Castleford made the final to play – of course – Wigan. Unfortunately they were again too strong and won 20-24.
Individual season performances were highlighted by Lee Crooks kicking 135 goals and St John Ellis scoring 40 tries to beat the club record of 36 from 1963–4 held by Keith Howe. To top both, John Joyner became the first Castleford coach to be named Coach of the Year, a remarkable achievement in his first season. Lee Crooks was also nominated as First Division Player of the Year but lost out to Jonathan Davies. Hat trick performances were led by St John Ellis with four, followed by Simon Middleton(twice), Mike Ford, Grant Anderson and Richie Blackmore
At the season end there were two big holes made in the team when St John Ellis, top try scorer, and Mike Ford, only player to play all 43 games, decided to follow former coach Darryl Van de Velde to the new team set up in Australia, Queensland Crushers.
Recognition for the club came in being named Stones Bitter team of the month in October and January. For the same months, St John Ellis and Lee Crooks were respectively named Sunday Mirror entertainer of the month.
In the Alliance Castleford slipped from their previous heights, finishing 6th in the league. However they went through to the final of the Yorkshire Senior Competition cup and beat Ryedale-York 24–4 with Paul Darley man of the match. The Academy had new coaches in Paul Orr and Martin Ward who replaced Dennis Hartley after he stepped down.
On the transfer front, Castleford had been bidding along with Halifax for Wakefield's Nigel Wright but Wigan outbid both, signing him for £140,000.
