Off the field, Len Garbett was asked to become president of the club and Jack Fulton had joined the board in the previous off-season.

After last year’s successful season, with a Regal Trophy win and a Premiership final, coach John Joyner needed to kick on. But the following chairman's notes from the programme for the season's first game bring a continuing Castleford reality to the fore – "The club has been in a precarious financial position for some considerable time now and during the close season reached crisis point. Despite this, every effort was made to retain players, but contracts offered by other clubs to entice players away were in my opinion ludicrous .… all clubs are getting deeper and deeper into debt …. and unless rugby league bring in a capping of contracts ... many clubs will fall by the wayside over the next few years"

The season opened brightly enough with 4 wins but went patchy for a while, during which time the Australians won 38–12 at Wheldon Road and Doncaster beat Castleford 35–28 at their home, for the first time in 36 years. After that shock though the team pulled itself together, winning 8 and drawing 1 of its 9 games. This brought Castleford through to a Regal Trophy semi-final and a rematch with Wigan from last year's final. Yet again though, Wigan were too strong and took revenge by 34–6. The resulting hangover was a poor run of 6 games which included a 17–2 exit at Warrington in the Challenge Cup. From the end of February however, the final 12 games in the season brought 10 wins, with 2 defeats – both against Warrington again. Included in them was an astonishing 86–0 home win against Wakefield, which was a club record winning margin and came right in the middle of the merger debate. It was also a Wakefield club record defeat.

Towards the end of the season, John Joyner added the Castleford legend Alan Hardisty to the coaching team, having agreed a two-year extension to his contract in December.

The league record was P30 W20 D2 L8 to finish 3rd from 16 and show they had endured the loss of the two influential players from last season. Overall 37 games were played and 29 players used. Tony Kemp and Richie Blackmore scored hat tricks but they were outshone by Tony Smith, who scored 4 against Doncaster. Unfortunately they were not enough to prevent an 18-25 defeat – the first such Castleford player performance to be on the wrong end of the result. Yet again the average attendance slipped, this year by 465 to 5090.

Lee Crooks again made the ton of goals, kicking 111. On his way there he became only the fourth Castleford player to score 1000 career points, the others being Albert Lunn, Geoff "Sammy" Lloyd and Robert Beardmore. Dean Sampson joined Parramatta for the short summer season.

In reward for his success and standing in the game, John Joyner became an assistant in the England World Cup coaching setup.

Grant Anderson was transferred to Halifax for £85,000 but later returned in 1996.

In the Alliance, Castleford slipped to a mid-table finish, coming 8th from 14 in the first division. However they again got to the final of the Yorkshire Senior Competition Challenge Cup before losing 10–27 to Bradford Northern.

All the seasons events, and probably those of the last hundred years, paled into insignificance in April when a new Sky TV deal was announced which would create a Super League of clubs, playing in summer and starting in 1996. Castleford would be merged with Featherstone Rovers and Wakefield Trinity to form a club called Calder. Although all chairmen had voted unanimously for the Super League, there were calls that they had been told to vote for it or be excluded. Shock waves went throughout the game, the biggest one being over the Calder proposal. In an unusual show of solidarity both sets of supporters of Castleford and Featherstone joined together at half-time on the pitch during a local derby at Post Office Road and let the powers that be know in no uncertain terms what they thought of a merger that would lose their club's identity. Fourteen days after the first announcement, Castleford withdrew from mergers, declaring they would go it alone. Seven days later the new leagues were announced, with Castleford in the Super League and both their neighbour clubs in a first division.

The Super League controversy was actually the second off field revolution of the season, as the previous August had seen publication of the Framing the Future document, which had brought minimum facilities standards and division size into the spotlight, issues that tended to dominate thinking for the next 15 years at least. It prompted Castleford to set plans in motion initially for a 2000/2500 seated new stand with function room and hospitality boxes. As time proved though, it did not come to fruition. February also saw the adoption of the salary cap for 1995/96, where no club could spend more than 50% of its income on players’ salaries.
